  • The conference will take place on June 2 at 7:00 p.m., at the headquarters of the Royal Foundation of Toledo and will be given by Marta Aguilar (University of Seville) and José María Bleda (University of Castilla-La Mancha).
  • The UCLM-Soliss Tagus Chair will present the results of “Testimonies of the Tagus River in Toledo”, a sociological investigation that recovers the collective memory of older people who had experiences in the Tagus of Toledo.
  • The research aims to ensure that these experiences can be repeated, proposing to public institutions the recovery of these spaces around the river for public use.

Along these lines, the UCLM-Soliss Tagus Chair has developed the research “Testimonies of the Tagus River in Toledo”, which aims to rescue the collective memory of the living witnesses who knew, lived and experienced part of their life in Toledo since the years 50 until 1972 (year of the prohibition of bathing in the Tagus River in Toledo).

Marta Aguilar (from the University of Seville) and José María Bleda (from the University of Castilla-La Mancha) have led this study. Through the application of the theoretical line of social semiotics and the life course methodology, a specific account of common experiences and memories has been constructed.

The research has focused on identifying what types of experiences they had in their youth (playful, work, family...). In addition to direct testimonies, written documents and graphic images (photographs, documentaries, films, drawings, paintings...) from those years lived have been recovered. The aim of all of this is to contribute to ensuring that at least part of these experiences can be enjoyed again, making the Tagus River a living place, proposing to the competent administrations the recovery of spaces around the river for public use.
