We study the Tagus and its rivers

From the Tajo Chair we advance our knowledge of the Tagus basin.

We study the basin through several lines of research that we consider priority, approached in a multi- and interdisciplinary manner from different approaches: environmental, economic, sociological and legalamong others.

We have established two priority lines of action in our projects and studies:

  • The quality of the waters
  • The connectivity and functionality of river ecosystems

Water Quality

Discharges, purification, diffuse pollution, emerging contaminants, etc.

The state of the waters is one of the most visible and important problems in the Tagus axis, as well as in the middle and lower reaches of its main rivers.

Connectivity and functionality of river ecosystems

Ecological flows, the river ecosystem, regulation, ecosystem services, river restoration, etc.

The loss of the natural dynamics of rivers, generated by multiple human interventions in the basin, is another main cause of concern to be studied by the Chair. Furthermore, the ecosystem services that rivers can offer to society are directly related to their quality.
