{"id":3405,"date":"2022-04-04T08:00:18","date_gmt":"2022-04-04T06:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/catedradeltajo.es\/?p=3405"},"modified":"2022-03-31T14:07:46","modified_gmt":"2022-03-31T12:07:46","slug":"la-catedra-del-tajo-uclm-soliss-responde-por-que-el-rio-tajo-es-azul-hasta-aranjuez-y-ahi-se-vuelve-oscuro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/catedradeltajo.es\/en\/la-catedra-del-tajo-uclm-soliss-responde-por-que-el-rio-tajo-es-azul-hasta-aranjuez-y-ahi-se-vuelve-oscuro\/","title":{"rendered":"The Tagus Chair UCLM-Soliss Answers: Why is the Tagus River blue until Aranjuez and there it becomes dark?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Second installment of the series of popular articles <a href=\"https:\/\/catedradeltajo.es\/la-catedra-responde-2\/\">\u00abLa C\u00e1tedra Responde\u00bb<\/a> in which we try to provide arguments to understand the causes why the Tagus River changes state when it meets the Jarama River in Aranjuez.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river <\/span><b>Jarama provides contaminated water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Tagus River where the basins of both join, in the municipality of Aranjuez<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost all of the flow of the Jarama comes from <\/span><b>sewage water <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urban and industrial, which are <\/span><b>insufficiently purified<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jarama carries<\/span><b> three times more flow than the Tagus River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that's why it makes it dark<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contaminants carried by Jarama include <\/span><b>phosphorus, ammonium and nitrogen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in concentrations much higher than natural ones and <\/span><b>heavy metals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in addition to <\/span><b>little studied contaminants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that harm the living beings of the river<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lately, the photo of the Tagus River meeting the Jarama River has become popular. The image attracts attention for two reasons. The first is the disproportion of flow between the Jarama (the tributary) and the Tagus River (the receiver). The second is the <\/span><b>difference in shades<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the waters. Those of the Tagus are greenish blue and those of the <\/span><b>Jarama of an intense dark brown<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
